Alma A. Bennett, 95, of Vero Beach, Florida, and Lewes, Deleware, passed away peacefully at her summer home in Lewes, Sunday, October 30, 2011, after a brief illness.

She was born in New York City, June 17, 1916, and in 1943 married Walter I. Bennett, Jr., a Delaware river pilot, who passed away in 2000.

She is survived by her son Anthony Judson Bennett and his wife Maria; three grandchildren, Walter Judson Bennett, Brian Jonathan Mann, and Erin Marie Erney; and six great-granchildren.

She served on the Lewes School District Board of Education from 1956 to 1961, taught at Lewes High School and taught sociology at Beebe School of Nursing for many years.

She was a former member and president of the Ladies Home Garden Club in Lewes and served as a board member of the Smyrna Welfare Home under Gov. Charles Terry.

She spoke fluent French, Italian, and Spanish and often substituted in those fields in all of the school districts in Sussex County. She and her husband were former member of the Rehoboth Beach Country Club and lifetime member of the Lewes Yacht Club.

A memorial service will be held for her in the late spring at the Lewes Yacht Club. Funeral services were private.
