VERO BEACH, FL - Catherine "Kay" Louise McConnell passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 17, 2012 in Vero Beach, FL. Kay was 84. Kay was a resident of Vero Beach, FL and Pawling, NY. Kay was a woman of great strength and always had a positive outlook on life. She fought a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's.

Kay grew up in Yonkers, New York and was the beloved wife of John McConnell who predeceased her in 1998. Kay's loving son David predeceased her in 2005. Kay loved spending many hours in her garden and she loved horseback riding. Kay was an avid volunteer, dedicating years of service to the American Legion Auxiliary. Her fondest memories were with the many American Legion Auxiliary trips she would take with her friends.

Kay is survived by her son, Douglas and his wife Heather of Poughquag, NY; daughter-in-law, Suellen McConnell of Virginia; five grandchildren, Gregg, Stephanie, Jenna, Morgan and Christopher and great-granddaughter Erika. Kay also leaves behind two sister-in-laws Margaret Santhouse of England and Joan Santhouse of Florida and several nieces and nephews.

She also leaves many friends she has met over the years and her best friends who were dear to her heart, Sue Patterson and Bob and Arlene Conn of Vero Beach, FL. A Memorial Service will be held 3:00 p.m. on May 23 at the Memorial Garden of The Community Church, 1901 23rd Street Vero Beach, FL 32960. Another service will be held for family members in New York at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Alzheimer's Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Ave., 7th floor, New York, NY 10001.
